As part of my Industrial Design degree at Carleton University I had to fulfill a 3 month internship in a design related field. During my internship I had the opportunity to work on props from the TV shows Titans, American Gods and Star Trek.
This was the first TV prop I helped create. 3D printing most of the parts we filled the layer lines with body filler then painted the helmet adding lights really made the helmet come to life. I delivered this prop to set and got to get them ready for the actors while filming. Images captured from Netflix original series, Titans.
Working at Colpitts I had the opportunity to help build Odin's spear from the TV show American Gods. This project involved 3D printing, clay modeling, silicone casting, CNC work and laser cutting.
Another prop from American Gods I helped build was the torture device used in Season 2 Episode 2. This was especially significant because I installed this prop on this set in Toronto and got to talk with the actors and director about the prop. Image captured from Canada Film Capital and Fremantel's original series, American Gods.
This project involved duplicates of the same prop to simulate different situations in the episode. This involved an attention to detail creating the same effects on the main body to make them look like the same prop.
This project allowed me to spend more time on the set of the film when I had to repair parts on the prop when they were broken while filming. I also had the opportunity to manipulate the prop while filming was taking place.
Working with Prop master Mario Moreira from Star Trek I got an understanding on how the prop was going to be used in the scene.
At the shop there was a 60 and 120 ton injection molding machine. This gave me the opportunity to take part in the whole process of manufacturing from meeting with clients, designing parts, designing molds, CNCing the molds, preparing the molds/machines and running the injection molding machines.
Creating silicone molds is where i learned a lot about mold making as i was able to design and pour the molds myself. I learned about the different densities of materials used depending on the part, how to design/create a mold, the casting of the part and finishing.
